The U.S. Department of State has announced that the travel alert issued for Honduras is canceled, effective immediately.
In its notice, the Bureau of Consular Affairs stated, "The improved security situation in Honduras has removed the immediate threat to the safety and security of U.S. citizens in Honduras."
Political instability following the ousting of former Honduras President Manuel Zelaya led to the original travel alert placed on Honduras on July 24, 2009. A peaceful election took place Nov. 29, when Porfirio Lobo was elected president. He will take office Jan. 27, 2010.
